Elementary Kids Classes
Edwin's elementary kids classes include a balanced
approach of speaking, listening, reading and writing. The main purpose of
the class is for kids to become accustomed to conversing with foreigners at a
young age. In this way, any nervousness is removed and therefore students
can attain a positive attitude to learning English.
Speaking
English classroom instruction usually
involves the teacher asking simple, formulated questions so that students are
able to reply even if they don't fully understand what is being asked. At
Edwin we try to encourage students to think about the questions and give answers
which show their understanding.
Listening
All teachers at Edwin are native English
speakers which allows students to hear real English and therefore helps accurate
pronunciation development at a young age. This system more effective than
listening to English CDs or other English materials as using these materials
only allows for one-way learning. By conversing with a native English
speaker in a two-way situation students can 'tune-in' to the language and become
truly internationalized.
Reading
Students learn English through "phonics",
which is how native English speaking children learn to read. Through this
system students can learn to read English naturally rather than by 'romanji' or
'katakana' accented reading. We never use katakana English as this teaches
incorrect pronunciation and inhibits listening skills.
Writing
Students practice writing in their
textbooks and homebooks and they also do a lot of writing in their notebooks.
English vocabulary learning is similar to kanji learning - first you learn how
to read, then learn the meaning and finally practice writing over and over.
Writing practice is also set for homework.
